A greenhouse is actually a closed ecosystem having glass or plastic surfaces. Fresh plants and flowers which are not in season are grown in greenhouse because greenhouses regulate heat balance, humidity as well as light requirements. For this, you will have to keep in mind certain considerations while building a greenhouse. For example, you must make sure that your greenhouse faces southern part of direction. Some other tips on growing flowers in greenhouse are as follows:
- First of all, you will have to maintain proper temperature in your greenhouse. Day time temperature should not exceed 90 degrees. To maintain this temperature, you will require having doors and windows in greenhouse so that they can be opened to provide flowers with proper ventilation especially on sunny and hot days.
- As far as night time temperature is concerned, it should be not less than 50 degrees. You can use a number of ways to maintain night time temperature of greenhouse but it will all depend on area in which your greenhouse is located. One easy method is to fill some 5 gallons bucket with water and place them in greenhouse so that they can collect heat during day. In this way, heat will be retained and greenhouse will remain warm during night. Always place buckets of waters with their lids on them. It is necessary to prevent insects from reproducing in water.
- For proper air circulation and ventilation, use a circulating fan. Circulating fans can be used even when doors and windows are not open. Air circulation is important to provide as it helps growing plants properly.
- Make a schedule to water plants and follow this schedule on regular basis. If you have a smaller greenhouse, it would be enough to water plants once a day but in larger area, you will need to water plants more frequently. Also remember that water requirements of plants increase when temperature rises.
- Tropical plants need humid conditions for their growth. If you have grown tropical flowers in greenhouse, make sure you have provided them with humidity trays. It is very easy to prepare a humidity tray as any plastic tray filled with water and having pebbles in it serves as a humidity tray.
- Last but not the least; you will need to be careful about fertilizing needs of your plants. You can fertilize your plants with either ½ or ¼ strength water soluble fertilizer. Make sure to fertilize plants on weekly basis.
After following these tips, you will be able to grow varieties of flowers in your greenhouse. Some of the popular flowers which can be grown in greenhouse include poppies, zinnias, marigolds and snapdragons.

Making Wrist Orchid Corsage
Posted February 3, 2011
on:Orchid flowers have different uses. They are used for making wedding bouquets, floral arrangements and most interestingly for making corsages. You can choose orchids to make a corsage for your wrist. Just select some beautiful orchids from your garden and choose those colors that will go with your dress and make a stylish corsage for your wrist. If you don’t want to be specific then choose white orchids for making corsage. But the question arises that what is the method of making wrist corsages using orchid flowers. To answer this question, here are some important instructions:
Selecting and Cutting Flowers
First step is to choose fresh and elegant looking flowers from the garden. Now separate your favorite flowers keeping in mind that their buds remain in tact. While cutting the flowers, make sure that you leave the stems adequately long to be tied jointly so leave about one inch of stems. You will require 3 flowers for making a corsage.
Attaching Wire to Flowers
Next step is to attach floral wire to flowers. After doing this, you will need to wrap the flowers with floral tape so that they hold in place.
Arranging the Flowers
In this step, the orchids are gathered in one hand making sure that a simple bouquet is formed. Now flowers are arranged in such a way that largest bloom remains in the center and smaller blooms remain on either sides.
Forming One Stem
Now firmly grasp the flowers and use floral tape to tie the three stems together. Now one single stem would be formed.
Removing the Buds
In this step, buds are removed from stalks. Cutting of buds should be done in such a way that a longer stem is left as compared to the stems you had left on blooms. Its length would depend on the bloom size. The length of bud stem should be 4 to 6 inches.
Attaching the Buds
Now corsage is turned upside down and bud is attached to the back. Again floral tape will be used for attaching the buds. Stem of the buds are attached to other stems in the same way as it was done with blooms.
Cutting Ribbon
Using a length of ribbon; measure your wrist. You should add almost 3 inches to make sure that the ribbon’s length is sufficient to tie the corsage and wrist as well. Now cut the ribbon according to the measured length.
Fastening the Ribbon
In this step, the corsage is turned in such a way that its back is in front of you. Then ribbon is tied in a single knot to the taped stems which are at the back of arrangement.
Preserving Corsage
Before wearing corsage, it must be preserved in fridge for 24 hours.
After this your orchid corsage is ready to wear. Now wear it on weddings, parties or prom nights and enhance the elegance of your stylish looks and beautiful dress.

Sunflowers are the bold and attractive flowers that add height and beauty to your garden. Their seeds can be sowed directly in outdoor soil, but they are the big attraction for the seed-eating birds and squirrels. Therefore, it is best to start seeding them indoors and later, when the danger of frost and animals is gone can be transplanted to the garden.
Following things are needed to plant sunflower seeds indoors:
- Sunflower seeds
- Terracotta pots
- Terracotta flood trays
- Clear plastic wrap
- Peat moss or Potting soil
- Old spoon or garden trowel
- Water
To start, place newspapers or an old cloth on the work area to keep the floor or ground clean.
Prepare the terracotta pots for the sunflower seeds:
The first step is to fill about three-fourth of the each pot with peat moss or potting soil. Place the filled terracotta pots on the flood tray.
Planting the sunflower seeds:
It is important to plant two or three sunflower seeds in each terracotta pot. You can either push the sunflower seeds down into the potting soil or place them on the top of the soil and cover them with another layer of potting soil. It is highly recommended to cover all the seeds with 1 inch of soil.
After planting, gently press the soil and water thoroughly until the soil is humid but not drenched. It is essential to keep the outside of the terracotta pots damp, and also try not to let the water stay in the flood trays for a long time.
Help the sunflower seeds sprout:
After planting the sunflower seeds in pots and placing them in the trays, its time to create a greenhouse effect for the seeds to germinate. For this, tightly cover each terracotta pot with the clear plastic wrap. Ensure that the plastic wrap is free of wrinkles and that the pots are fully sealed. This will help in keeping the moisture inside the growing area.
Place these covered pots in a sunny window and check them daily to ensure they are staying humid. Water them when the top layer of soil is dry. You can check the humidity and give water to them by peeling away a corner of the plastic wrap.
Once the seedlings reach half inch high, remove the plastic wrap and keep them at the room temperature so that the seedlings remain warm enough. Water them whenever necessary and provide enough light to make them grow fast.
The ideal time for transplanting the sunflower seedlings into outdoor soil is when they are a couple of inches tall and strong enough to grow in the outdoor environment.
Starting sunflower seeds indoors not only saves them from animals and cold temperatures but also provides them a good start on the growing season, giving beautiful and lovely flowers and adding splendor to the garden.
