  • Next step is to cut a wire having a length of 2 inches. The top half inch of wire should be now bent in the form of a hook.
  • Now the long end of wire is pushed into flowers so that the hook comes at center of flower and the flower is protruded from its back. Keep in mind that the hook should not be visible from the front. Actually the purpose of hook is to attach floral wire to the flowers so that they can be easily placed in floral arrangements.
  • Take some silica gel and make a layer of about one inch in a container made of plastic. Make sure that the lid of the container is tight. Take flowers and lay them on the top of silica gel layer. Keep in mind to place the flowers facing upwards. Now gently push sunflowers into gel.
  • In the next step, silica crystals are sprinkled on the top of flowers. To keep the sunflowers in their natural shape, try to make sure that crystals reach between and under sunflowers petals. Continue to sprinkle the gel until the flowers are fully covered with. Now cover the container with its lid and leave the flowers in the mixture for 2 days.
  • After two days, remove lid. In order to remove gel and disclose the center of flowers, brush the gel carefully. If the center of flower is dried then it is ready to be used but if it is not dried completely then leave it for one more day.
  • The last step is to lift the flowers out of gel. To perform this process successfully, take down or slip your fingers under sunflowers and lift them. Now remove the excessive gel by turning flowers upside down and tapping them on the back. Your sunflowers are now dried and ready to be used for arrangements. These flowers can also be stored in sealed bags if you don’t have any intentions to use them immediately.

Digging Holes

To grow giant sunflowers, you will require digging a hole having a circumference of 2 feet and a depth of 18 inches. The holes should be dug in such a way that center of one hole is two feet away from the center of previous hole. Remember that more space between sunflower plants result in larger flowers and thinner stalks while less space may result in smaller flowers and thicker stalks so if you want huge sunflowers to grow ideally, you will require maintaining a space of 24 inches between two plants.

Preparing the Soil

Ordinary sunflowers can grow in poor soil conditions but giant sunflowers cannot so prepare the soil carefully. After loosening the soil you have removed from holes, remove rocks, roots and stones from soil. Prepare a mixture of half a shovel of potting mix and half shovel of humus and then back fill your holes with this mixture.

Planting Seeds

The best time for planting giant sunflower seeds is from mid May to early June. While planting seeds, make sure that you are planting three seeds in each hole. These seeds should be positioned about an inch apart form each other. Push each seed in soil to a depth of one inch. You can use your finger for this purpose. After planting the seeds, sprinkle a little soil over buried seeds and then pat the soil using your hands.

Watering Giant Sunflowers

Giant sunflowers consume a lot of water but remember that over watering these plants may soften the roots making them incapable of supporting the huge plant.  Don’t water sunflowers in case of puddling but after that if you feel that soil has dried out, water your giant sunflowers.

A liquid fertilizer should be used after every 1-2 weeks. Remember not to fertilize the flower or the stalk directly because it may rotten and weaken your plant. Instead of it, pour liquid fertilizer around the base of plant.

  • Firstly, you will prepare your pots in which you are going to plant your sunflowers so fill the pots with a fertile potting mix containing moss, peat and compost. If you have a plan to transplant the seedlings later then you can use small pots. But make sure that these pots should have a diameter of at least one foot so that they can handle large roots of sunflowers.

Arrange these lights in such a way that they are few inches away from the soil surface. The purpose of using lights is to make sure that sunflower seeds receive 12 hours of light in a day either all light from fluorescent tubes or by the combination of natural and artificial light.
  • When you see that your seedlings have begun to grow, raise the lights to provide them enough room for their growth. Ensure that lights are always a few inches from the tallest plant.

Perennial sunflowers, which are mostly grown in vegetable gardens, are more refined and popular than annual sunflowers because they have finer leaves and smaller flowers. There are some kinds of perennial sunflowers which can grow up very tall. I have also grown some of perennial sunflowers in my garden and I suggest you to do the same because these flowers are not only beautiful but also attract butterflies and birds. Here I have made a list of perennial sunflowers from which you can choose one to grow in your garden.

Thin-Leaved Sunflowers

Thin-leaved sunflowers can grow up to five feet tall provided that they are planted in full sun or partial shade. They are quite popular among growers because they are adaptable to different soil and light conditions. Having bright yellow color with a greenish central cone, these sunflowers are long lasting when used as cut flowers. This plant produces more flowers when it is properly deadheaded. Best growing season for these sunflowers is late summer or early fall as they are at their peak at these times of year.

Maximilian’s Sunflowers

This type of perennial sunflowers is the tallest among perennial sunflowers as it can grow up to six to seven feet tall. Its height can vary depending upon soil conditions and humidity. These plants produce bright yellow flowers from mid summer to late summer.

Swamp Sunflowers

Having yellow flowers with dark centers, these flowers are native to East Coast. Their best attribute is that they can tolerate damp soil conditions which other plants can’t. Its blooming season starts from late August and continues until October. These plants can also grow up to seven feet tall.

This plant produces golden-yellow flowers all summer and can grow up to a height of four to five feet. These sunflower plants attract butterflies and hummingbirds and due to this quality, I have also grown these in my home garden. Flore-pleno is resistant to pests and diseases and requires partial shade to grow well.

Woodland Sunflowers

Like swamp sunflowers, these are also native to East Coast. These sunflowers naturally grow in wooded areas having clear-yellow flowers and stiff leaves which are like sandpaper. These sunflowers are a good choice for those gardens which have partially shaded locations.

Sunflowers are beautiful creature of God which adds colors and beauty to a garden so consider growing any of the above perennial sunflowers to beautify your garden.

Also known as ‘dwarf sunflowers’, miniature sunflowers are shorter and have smaller heads. They are easy to grow therefore they are popularly grown by kids and amateur gardeners. Being an amateur gardener, I also grew these sunflowers in my garden for which I researched a lot and gathered some useful tips to grow miniature sunflowers. If you are also interested in growing these flowers, read this post carefully:

Planting Plan: Firstly I would like to tell you that you should make a growth plan for mini sunflowers at least two or three weeks before the last snow fall. And one more thing! Start growing mini sunflowers indoors and after they have grown properly, you can transplant them.

Selection of Containers: Now, select containers for your mini sunflowers. While choosing container, make sure that their opening is spacious and they are not too narrow because a narrow container will make it difficult for you to transplant sunflowers. Mini sunflowers also need drainage so select a container that can drain well.

Filling Containers with Soil: After carefully selecting containers, fill them with rich and fertile potting soil making sure that you have left half inch of space. Mini sunflowers take essential nutrients from the soil rapidly so if you are growing sunflowers in containers, you will be required to recondition the soil a number of times in a year. Now, you can sow seeds of mini sunflowers. Sprinkle seeds equally on the surface of soil.

Sowing Seeds: Don’t forget to cover the seeds lightly with half inch layer of soil. You can do so with the help of a garden spade or you can use your hands also. I prefer you to do this with your hands. If you are growing miniature sunflowers in more than one container, repeat the same process of sowing seeds in each container.

Watering Soil: Soil needs to be watered after sowing seeds so water each of your containers openhandedly until you feel that soil has become damp enough. You can check dampness by putting your finger one inch deep in the soil. It means that you should feel dampness up to one inch deep in soil.

Placing in Sunny Location: As mini sunflowers need sufficient sunlight, place your containers near a window that receives full sunlight. After the last frost, when the ground defrosts, transplant sunflowers. You will again have to choose a place receiving full sun. Bury your seedlings keeping a distance of 3 to 4 inches between them.

I hope that the above mentioned tips are enough for growing mini sunflowers. Follow these and have healthy miniature sunflowers in your garden.

Sunflowers grow very fast and have beautiful blooms so they are very popular among flowers growers. To recognize a sunflower is very easy because of its bright and eye-catching yellow color. But there are some species of sunflowers that are having so many types making it difficult to recognize their plants. There are some features of these flowers that can help you to recognize and identify sunflower plants. Here I am going to describe these.

Notice the Growth of Plants

If you are facing problem in identifying these plants, then the first thing to follow is paying attention to their growth. The daily growth of sunflower plants is quite easy to notice as they can grow tall in several inches daily. Also remember that the flowers on these plants start blooming in late summer.

Feel the Leaves

The next method to identify these plants is to feel and watch the leaves carefully. The leaves are of dark green color having coarse edges. As far as feeling the leaves is concerned, they give a furry and shaggy feeling making it easy to recognize.

Watch their Position Carefully

As the sunflowers turn their heads towards the sun during daytime and stoop in the night so this feature can be proved very helpful in identifying these plants.

Looking Carefully to the Blooms

There is another distinguishing feature of sunflower plants that can help you to recognize them. For this, look carefully to the blooms. You will find that the blooms are made of several mini-flowers. This feature is not found in any other plant so you can easily recognize them. The mini-flowers will have five petals which will be merged together and surrounded by five stamens as well. This is another way you can identify sunflowers.

These were some steps describing the method of identifying sunflower plants. Hope you will find them very helpful.

Daylily is usually referred to the species, hybrids and cultivars of the genus Hemerocallis. Gardening experts hybridize these plants, resulting in a wide range of colors and forms of its flowers. To identify its bloom in a garden, one should know about the different parts of plant and also flower characteristics of Hemerocallis.

Here are the main points that will help you in identifying a daylily bloom in a garden.

Hemerocallis Bloom Structure:

Daylily is the common name of Hemerocallis. Its flower is a tubular shaped bloom and is often scented. The petals of the bloom mostly consist of six perianth segments arranged in two rows. If looking at it from above, you will see three inner petals covering with three outer sepals. A daylily with double flowers is known as Polymerous because there are more than six perianth segments in it.

The center vein of a petal or sepal is called midrib that runs along the length. The term midrib is used to describe the color or pattern in a daylily bloom.

The centermost inner part of the flower is called throat, and the place above the throat is called eye zone which creates a visual circle around the flower.

Daylily plants bloom from summer through winter and its blooms last for only one day. Flowers of some species of Hemerocallis open in the morning and shrivel in the evening, whereas some of its species bloom at night.

Perennial Daylily Plant Form:

A daylily plant is the perennial, and grows in a large bunch with long strap-like leaves, mostly 1 ft – 2 ft long. The plant has vertical leafless flower stems known as scapes.

Excluding the bracts, scapes are leafless that appear from the crown of the daylily. Bracts are modified leaves affixed to the scape. These bracts indicate whether more branches will develop in future or not.

The white core between the leaves and the roots is called the crown of a daylily plant. It is planted underground. A part of the crown should be included when dividing the plant. The roots of a plant are quite fibrous, but the whole root system is very thick.

Hemerocallis in Flower Gardens

Generally, daylily plants grow in direct sunlight but they can also easily tolerate partially shady areas. They prefer humid and well-draining soil modified with organic matter. Daylilies also have enough ability to tolerate hard soil conditions, e.g. heavy clay, competition with tree roots for getting water and minerals etc. Also, strong and fully grown daylily plants can tolerate dearth conditions.

Daylily plants need minimum fertilizer for blooming and stay in good health when dug, separated, and replanted almost every three years. They can grow fast, and can easily fill the garden spaces.
