Perennial plants are versatile and are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes therefore amateur gardeners love to grow these plants in their garden. Like others, these plants also need special care and handling if you want them to bloom healthily and beautifully. If you are also looking for some tips for perennial plants care, then this post may prove very useful for you as I am going to give you some tips and instructions regarding perennial plants care:

  • Perennials should be grown in well-drained soil. If you have grown them at a location where it becomes a pool after rainfall then you are required to change their location.
  • Perennials are required to be watered regularly especially when it is their first growing season. Most of the perennials require to be watered once a week up to a depth of eight inches. The best time for watering perennial plants is morning time so that their leaves can become dry before evening.
  • Different perennial plants require different light requirements so I would like to suggest you to plant them at a location where they can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight. But there are some varieties of perennials like ferns which require sunlight early in the morning and shade in afternoon.
  • As far as fertilizing is concerned, perennials should be fertilized in early spring before their new growth appears. Every 100 square feet of planting area requires about one to two pounds of grainy fertilizer.
  • You also require pulling weeds around the plants on regular basis. In order to control growth of weeds, you are recommended to apply 1 or 2 inches of organic mulch like shipped bark around plants. Mulch actually preserves dampness and controls growth of weeds.
  • Spent blooms should be removed as it will extend blooming time.
  • Last but not the least; you should keep flower beds neat and clean as dirty flower beds can attract pests to attack plants.

These were some very useful tips which you should follow for proper care of your perennials to have healthy and beautiful blooming plants in your garden.

Marigolds are attractive and good looking flowers that can enhance grace and beauty of garden. They are very easy to grow and the best thing about these flowers is that their seeds can be preserved to plant these flowers and there is no need to buy them every year. I have done some research on the methods of preserving marigold seeds and the best method which I found is explained below:

Things you will Needs to Dry Seeds

The things that will be required for drying and preserving seeds include:

  • Dead Seeds heads of marigolds
  • Paper bag
  • Oven

Method of preserving marigold seeds is as follows:

  • Picking Time: Marigold seeds are picked during fall season, so choose a sunny morning to pick the seeds but remember to do this after the dew has dried.
  • Seeds to Be Picked: Now pick a bunch of seeds from plant that are fleshy and hard. Don’t pick spongy seeds.
  • Placing Them in Tray: Place these seeds in a tray spreading them in one layer.
  • Drying the Seeds: Place seeds in a warm and dry place. This process can take place in an oven that makes the drying process faster. Temperature required to dry them is 140 degrees. It is very important to let the seeds dry because if they don’t get dry, they will be eaten by bugs and insects and your effort to preserve seeds for next season will go in smoke.
  • Storing the Seeds after Drying: After drying the seeds, put them in a paper bag and keep it in a cool and dry place. Do remember to keep them covered to protect them from spiders and mice as seeds are delicious food for them. An interesting fact about the marigold seeds is that each seed has further 150 seeds so picking a few handfuls of seeds would be more than enough for your garden.

Here the process of preserving marigold seeds is completed. Now they are ready to be separated and planted in spring season. Seeds that should be picked must have bright black section, so pick seeds carefully, dry them and then plant them in your garden.

Marigolds are among one of the flowers that have long life. These are very beautiful looking flowers having eye-catching colors like yellow, orange and red. Their blooming season starts from the mid-summers and ends with the first frost of fall season. Planting marigolds is almost effortless provided that their growing requirements are fulfilled. Here I am giving some instructions and tips regarding the plantation of marigold flowers:

Select Sunny Location

Marigolds thrive in full or partial sun so you should find a place accordingly.

Start Planting Process

You can start the planting process after the last snow fall of the season. If you want to grow them before the last frost then you can plant them indoors in such containers having potting soil. After the frost, you can change their place by replanting them outside in your garden. This whole process will help these flowers to produce blooms early in the season.

Select Area having Rich Soil

Now you will have to select a location having rich soil. Before planting the flowers, you will have to add fertilizer to the soil if it is poor in terms of richness. After adding manure, your next step is to dig the manure in soil using a shovel.

Sow the Seeds

Now the next step is to sow the seeds in the garden. The distance between the seeds and giant marigolds should be at least one to two feet. After sowing the seeds, they should be covered with a thin layer of soil. You can use trowel for this purpose.

Douse the Seeds

Next step is to drench the seeds with water using a water jug or pipe.

Keep the Soil Humid

Once the seeds start to germinate and plants are established, you should make sure to keep the soil damp. But here one thing should be kept in mind that soil should not be saturated with too much of water.

Add Mulch

In order to control the growth of weeds and to keep the moisture preserved around the plant, you should add mulch.

Water during Dry Weather

Another important tip is that, during the dry weather, water plants once or twice a week.

Remove Finished Blossoms

When your plants start flowering in mid-summer, you must deadhead the finished blossoms. It will help the plant to grow well and improve the look of marigold flowers.

Continue Periodic Watering

Episodic watering should be continued on weekly basis until after the first frost.

These were some important steps that must be followed for the successful plantation and healthy growth of marigold flowers.

Orchids are one of the darling flowers of amateur gardeners and growers. They add to the beauty and grace of gardens as well as rooms if they are grown indoors. They are bright and attractive flowers and very easy to grow. But at the same time, they need special care especially when they are blooming. Most of the orchid growers are unaware of caring for them while they are blooming. Keeping this in mind, I am giving you some tips and instructions about taking care of blooming orchid plants.

Important Tips

  • You should feed the blooming orchid plants properly. You can feed your orchids once in a week with orchid food. But remember that the particular food should not contain urea. You should also consider about the method of feeding orchid plants. It’s very simple. All you have to do is to make the orchid food thinned and diluted first so that its strength and concentration may reduce.  Then you can give this food to your plants while watering them.
  • Orchids don’t like direct sunlight. Moreover the blooms of orchids become withered and are burnt in direct sunlight. So it is necessary to place them at a location that doesn’t receive direct sunlight.
  • While flowering, the orchids should not be moved. They should be placed in a moderately warm location approximately above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If orchid plants are given stress and exposed to chilly air, their blooms will start falling earlier than normal blooming time.
  • Watering is another important factor to be remembered while taking care of blooming orchids. The best time to water blooming orchids is morning time. But remember that they should be watered only when the soil becomes dry. The frequency of watering should be once in a week but it all depends on the climate you are growing orchids in. Over-watering can spoil the plants. The best method is to touch your finger with soil. If it is dry then it means that plants require water.
  • Always use moderately warm tap water while watering the orchid plants. Remember not to drench the soil with water. The amount of the water should be enough to just moist the soil.
  • When orchid flowers begin to wither, remove them. The usual blooming time of orchid flowers is about one to four months.
  • After blooming, trim the plants. There are some types of orchids that bloom again after pruning while some bloom only once.

These were some important instructions related to care of blooming orchid plants. I hope that they will guide and help you a lot.

A rain garden is built in an unoccupied space that can capture rain water. By building a rain garden you can have such a beautiful garden that grows and flourishes by using rainwater. As the storm water contributes a lot in polluting the natural water bodies like ponds and streams, building a rain garden can be proved very helpful in removing that storm water. Building a rain garden is not as difficult as it seems to be. Follow some simple steps and build your own rain garden.

Important Steps to be followed

  • The first step is to choose a suitable location. Keep in mind that the distance between rain garden and your home should be approximately 10 feet as it will stop flooding in your house. Try to choose a naturally low space in your yard. You should also make sure that you have chosen a sunny location for your rain garden.
  • If you have selected a low space to make a rain garden then there is no need of a drainage area. But make sure that the selected area should receive rain water during rainfall. The problem occurs when you have selected a roof or hard surface for capturing water. In that case, you will have to measure a drainage area and multiply it with number associated with the type of soil.
  • Now you have to create a design of your rain garden. The best way to do this is to make a design on the paper so that you can create the best appearance of your garden.
  • The most important step is to choose the plants for your rain garden. It is recommended to choose native plants as they can adapt to the environment and climate. Make sure that the plants you have chosen for your garden are able to grow in both wet and dry areas as rain garden will be filled with water frequently.
  • Now keeping in mind the design of your garden make the boundary and shape of your rain garden.
  • The next step is to dig the garden approximately 4-8 inches deep. Now prepare the soil and adjust it with 2”-3” of manure and mix it well with the soil.
  • Place the plants according to the design you have made for your rain garden. The distance between plants should be at least one foot. After planting every flower and plant, step back and have a look at your garden to ensure that they go well with the design you have made for your garden.
  • You should use frayed woodchips that can’t drift or scatter.  Next you should apply mulch two to three inches deep to keep the wetness in the soil. It will also help to keep the weeds out.
  • Watering the garden is a vital step. If it not rains for two weeks after you have built the rain garden, then it is recommended to water it every other day until it looks that your garden have started growing at its own.

I hope that above mentioned steps would be very helpful for you to build your rain garden.
