Growing zinnias from seeds is the best option for beginners as they grow very quickly with little efforts. Are you looking for some guidelines about growing these beautiful flowers? If yes then this post is going to be very helpful for you as I have described some easy steps for growing zinnia flowers from seeds:

  • Firstly you will require preparing a bed that receives sunlight for six to eight hours a day. Now dig the soil to a depth of approximately 8 inches and add manure or compost. This is necessary to increase exposure to air and improve drainage.
  • Zinnias should be planted within four weeks before the last frost. When it comes to sowing seeds, you need to have proper guidance. You will require sowing two seeds per pot in damp seed starter and after that you can place these pots in a warm location like at the top of a heater or TV to provide them with bottom heat. It sounds strange but it is a proven method to speed up germination process. You will see seedlings rising from soil after three to five days but remember that it all depends on the soil temperature. After seedlings have emerged and developed second set of leaves, they can be planted as one plant per pot.  When you feel sure that soil has warmed and threat of snow falling has passed, you can transplant them to a permanent location. While transplanting, extra care is needed because zinnias don’t like their roots to be distributed.
  • As I mentioned earlier, sow seeds in their permanent location in late spring after snow falling. While sowing seeds, make sure that distance between them should be between 9 and 12 inches because larger varieties of zinnias require more space as compared to smaller ones. The instructions regarded planting and spacing which are mentioned above, can also be found on seeds packets.
  • After sowing seeds, cover them lightly with the soil and keep the seeds equally damp until they sprout.
  • Watering is required on regular basis until plants are fully developed. Zinnia seeds mostly grow and survive under natural circumstances but they may require additional water during dry periods.

These were some tips of growing zinnias from seeds which I also followed when I grew zinnias for the first time in my home garden so follow these tips to have beautiful zinnias in your garden.
